On-Call EMS Provider - CES
Service Type: Classified - Range M (56-hour)
Definition: Under the general direction and supervision of the Chief, or his designee, and the physician sponsor when appropriate, the EMS personnel performs emergency procedures in order to preserve and maintain life. EMS personnel are also responsible for maintaining facilities, apparatus and equipment.
Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma, or GED; at least 18 years of age. Must be currently certified as a minimum of Emergency Medical Technician I by the State of Alaska EMS program and current BLS certification. This position requires a valid, unrestricted Alaska driver’s license, which must be maintained at all times.
Essential Functions:
- Operates an emergency vehicle.
- Assesses the safety and hazards at the scene of an emergency.
- Controls the hazards at an emergency scene.
- Determines the nature and extent of illness or injury present and establishes the priorities for emergency care.
- Treats injuries or illness using basic life support techniques;
these may include:
cardiopulmonary resuscitation, airway management with bag valve mask device and oral or nasal airways, controlling bleeding, bandaging wounds, splinting of fractured or dislocated bones and joints, administration of oxygen, application of pneumatic anti-shock garment, traction splinting, and the use of oral glucose and charcoal. - Extricates patients from entrapment when appropriately trained with
gear.
Provides special rescue services where trained in those specific areas. - Performs triaging of patients and management of mass casualty situations.
- Lifts and moves patients.
- Utilizes specialized communication equipment to consult with physicians and/or notify hospitals of patient's condition.
- Completes detailed documentation on patient care and transport.
Understands and uses appropriate state and federal regulations pertaining to EMS, confined space, hazardous materials, incident command system, blood-borne pathogens, airborne pathogens, and controlled substances. - Reports verbally to receiving Physician as to the patient's condition and interventions performed when needed.
- Maintains the condition of the emergency response vehicle.
- Maintains, cleans, and re-stocks emergency supplies and equipment.
- Attends continuing medical education (CME) on an on-going basis.
- Performs emergency medical skills as defined by the State of Alaska and departmental Standard Operating Guidelines for the certification level held at the time of hire and/or obtained after employment. Certification levels shall be maintained.
- Has a working knowledge of the proper use of EMS emergency equipment.
- Has a working knowledge of proper radio procedures.
- Knows and follows departmental safety policies and procedures.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk, use hands to feel or handle objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk and hear; and smell. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must frequently transport up to 50 pounds, and occasionally transport over 100 pounds. Must pass the departmental physical agility test.
