Onlookers passing this scene early Monday evening probably expected the
outcome to be worse than it was.
According to Soldotna police, a total of five vehicles were involved in the
collision that took place at Mile 96.5 of the Sterling Highway, near Kalifornsky
Beach Road.
According to the report, a 1990 Subaru, driven by a 17-year-old
Soldotna male, was stopped on the highway waiting for traffic to clear the
K-Beach intersection and a 2004 Nissan pickup, were stopped in traffic behind
the Subaru. A 1990 Chevy pickup, driven by a 16-year-old Kenai male, was slowing
down to stop behind the Nissan, when a 2002 Subaru, driven by a 16-year-old
Soldotna female was approaching the Chevy from behind. The female was unable to
stop, rear-ending the Chevy, and the Subaru ended up partially underneath it. A
1997 Ford pickup, driven by a 17-year-old Soldotna male, also was unable to stop
in time, and he rear-ended the Subaru, driving it further up underneath the
Chevy. The rear of the Chevy came to rest on top of the Subaru, however, no
injuries were reported. The Subaru and the Chevy were towed from the scene and
the other involved vehicles were driven away. The Subaru was considered totaled.
